In his marriage record appears his place of birth as Namersto, Hungary, and occupation as Capitalist.

Julius Freud was born in Hungary in 1839 and at the age of seventeen came with his parents and other members of the family to Eagle Harbor, Michigan, a mining and timber area in the Upper Peninsula in Northern Michigan. Mining and lumbering were anybody's game in Michigan in the middle and latter parts of the last century. Land and labor were cheap and Julius Freud was among the early adventures in these industries. He opened a mining company store and later was one of the builders of Duluth, Minnesota, supplying lumber. He operated a lumber mill in Saginaw, Michigan, and a potato flour and dried vegetable factory in East Tawas, Michigan. Having prospered in his business ventures, Julius Freud moved to Detroit where he engaged for many years in real estate operations. He was post master of Eagle Harbor during his sojourn there served as president of Detroit's Temple Beth El and was a member of Pisgah Lodge B'nai B'rith, Phoenix Club, Royal Arcanum, and Knights of Honor. At the time of the first Joint Distribution Committee Drive in Detroit; which was headed by David A. Brown, he subscribed 10% of Detroit's goal of $250,000 and paid his pledge, partly in vegetables which he sent to Belgium, partly in war bonds, and the balance in cash. Mr. Freud was married to Carolyn Hesslein, in 1873.
Leopold Freud was born in Hungary in 1848 and came with his family to Eagle Harbor, Michigan, when he was a small boy. He was associated with his brother, Julias, in the mining company store and lumber business and later was the first subdivision man in Detroit. He served as Treasurer of Temple Beth El and was active in Jewish and civic organizations. He was married to Hanna Sittig.
